Going North

Day 13--North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland

We mapped out last night the places we wanted to stop on our way to Washington, DC.  Thankfully, Aunika has a free National Parks pass to get us into a lot of places for free.  That has been a lifesaver. We decided we would stop at York Town, site of one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War, and Manassas Battlefield (Bull Run Battle), site of one of the first battles of the Civil War.  And then a National Park, Great Falls, that was almost in DC.

It was evident from the first stop that I was much more excited about this part of the journey than anyone else.  I really like history and it's crazy to think that we're standing right at the most pivotal spots of our country.  I know that in time, the kids will come to appreciate this, but today was not that day.

York Town was really interesting.  There was a car tour of the different spots where the British and American troops were set up.

Manassas was probably my favorite though.  I'm much more into the Civil War then I am the Revolutionary War and I could have spent some more time here.  Unfortunately, they closed shortly after we arrived.  I have it earmarked for my return visit though.

Great Falls was really pretty, though very, very humid.  When we got to the overlook there were kayakers going over the falls!

We pulled into our hotel in Rockville, MD at about 7:00.  Not too late, though we did hit rush hour traffic through DC.  What a mess!

I'm so excited for DC in the morning!
